Head of Engineering owns technology strategy, leads a high-performing engineering team, establishes system architecture, and drives AI integration across the product and business.
Freddie’s Flowers was founded by Freddie Garland in October 2014 with one ambition: to change people’s relationship with flowers. We believe flowers aren’t only for grand occasions, but they make every day special, inspiring creativity and sparking joy.
Our starting point was our direct-to-consumer subscription model, helping us grow a loyal UK following. We launched in Germany in 2020, and then in 2021 we secured significant backing from The Craftory, a like-minded purpose-led global investment house, helping us expand, develop and grow. 2023 saw us start our gifting service – bringing the best of Freddie’s Flowers to everyone who needs it (even last minute!).
From the seed of an idea we continue to flourish; we’re now a B Corp organisation. And our founding mission remains unchanged – to change the world of flowers, and to change the world with flowers.
The Opportunity
Technology is the operating system of this business. Every customer interaction and every commercial decision flows through it. The goal is to make that operating system fast, reliable, and commercially intelligent. To make engineering the function that enables growth, not the one that responds to it.
The strategic direction is set and board-backed. The Head of Engineering owns its execution and will shape what good looks like in practice. That means ensuring a high-performing team, establishing the architecture that will carry the business through its next stage, and creating the conditions for engineering to operate as a genuine partner with a seat at the table when commercial decisions are made.
There is material commercial upside that has not yet been realised. Partnering with the Commercial function around customer data that could sharpen targeting and improve retention offers a significant opportunity. Demand forecasting, pricing optimisation, and AI integration across the product are further opportunities requiring ownership & delivery. This role has the mandate and the board visibility to pursue all of it.
What You Will Do
– Own the technology strategy end-to-end and deliver against measurable milestones
– Set the bar for a high-quality engineering team across hiring, standards, culture
– Establish engineering as a product partner, shaping the commercial roadmap as well as executing it
– Make the architecture and infrastructure decisions that will carry the business forward
– Lead the AI integration agenda across the product and the wider business
– Represent technology at leadership level with clarity and commercial authority
What We Need
– Scaled engineering in a DTC or subscription business. You know what breaks under real commercial pressure
– Hands-on technical depth: AWS-native, comfortable with architecture decisions, capable of writing production code when it matters
– Has hired engineers and built teams before
– Commercially literate. Frames technology in terms of cost, risk, and revenue, and is comfortable in a board conversation
– Motivated by what gets shipped and what it delivers, not the sophistication of the solution
Why Take This Role
– Full ownership: you are leading this team and this function. The architecture, the hiring, the standards. All yours, from day one
– A brand worth building for: Freddie’s has a genuine founder story, a loyal subscription customer base, and a floristry-first identity that sets it apart in a crowded market
– Commercial impact at scale: the data asset, the AI agenda, the shift to a mixed subscription and gifting model. There is material commercial upside for a technology leader who executes well
– Board visibility: you sit in the leadership team, report to the CGO, and have direct access to the people making the strategic decisions
– A real brief with backing to match: the strategic direction is agreed, the investment is committed, and the mandate is clear. This is not a role where you spend six months working out what to do
Inclusion:
Freddie’s Flowers recognises our success is dependent on the success of our people. Freddie’s Flowers is committed to creating an inclusive work environment with a diverse workforce where everyone feels safe and valued. All applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, disability or age.

Team: Kernels | Reports to: Engineering Manager, Kernels
Cross-functional interface: QA / Test Engineering
We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer, Test & Validation – AI Kernels to embed within our Kernels team and own the quality engineering function for our AI compute software stack. You will design and build the test infrastructure, validation frameworks, and automated verification pipelines that ensure correctness, performance, and reliability of software kernels running on next-generation AI hardware. You will serve as the primary quality interface between the Kernels team and the broader QA organization, driving alignment on test strategy, coverage, and release readiness.
This is a high-impact, deeply technical role that requires both strong software engineering skills and a rigorous quality mindset. You will work alongside compiler engineers, ML software engineers, and hardware architects while partnering closely with QA leads to define standards and share best practices across the company.
Design, build, and maintain scalable automated test frameworks for kernel validation across simulation, emulation, and silicon targets.
Develop correctness and performance regression suites covering ML operators (GEMMs, convolutions, BLAS, SIMD ops, softmax, layer norm, pooling, etc.).
Implement testing pipelines integrated into CI/CD workflows, enabling rapid feedback on kernel changes.
Build tooling to automate comparison of kernel outputs against reference implementations (e.g., CPU-based golden references, PyTorch/TensorFlow baselines).
Develop test coverage for software kernels targeting specialized hardware including AI accelerators, DSPs, FPGAs, and SIMD vector processors (e.g., Tensilica).
Validate numerical precision, edge cases, and boundary conditions for ML operators across data types and hardware configurations.
Partner with hardware teams (mixed signal, DSP, CPU) to validate hardware-software co-design assumptions and catch integration issues early.
Drive validation of compiler-generated code paths (MLIR, LLVM, TVM, etc.) through structured test methodologies.
Act as the primary liaison between the Kernels engineering team and the QA organization, aligning on test plans, coverage criteria, and release qualification gates.
Participate in QA planning ceremonies; represent Kernels team needs and surface quality risks early.
Contribute to and help maintain shared QA infrastructure, test standards, and reporting dashboards used across engineering.
Drive root cause analysis for test failures and escaped defects; work with Kernels engineers to close gaps.
Set quality standards and best practices for the Kernels team; mentor engineers on testability design and defensive coding.
Contribute to design reviews with a quality lens, identifying areas that require additional validation before tape-out or release.
Influence test strategy across the full software stack: from unit and integration tests to system-level validation on target hardware.
BSc in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Math, Physics, or a related field with 6+ years of industry experience; or MS with 4+ years of experience; or PhD with 2+ years of experience, with at least 2 years focused on test engineering, SDET, or quality engineering roles.
Strong understanding of computer architecture, data structures, and machine learning fundamentals, sufficient to reason about correctness and performance of ML kernels.
Proficient in C/C++ and Python; experience writing production-quality test code in these languages in Linux environments.
Experience writing automated tests for algorithms targeting specialized hardware such as GPUs, DSPs, FPGAs, or AI accelerators (e.g., using CUDA or equivalent).
Familiarity with ML operators commonly used in production workloads: GEMMs, convolutions, BLAS, SIMD operations, softmax, layer normalization, pooling, and similar.
Experience building or working within CI/CD pipelines and automated regression systems.
Track record of owning quality outcomes, not just executing tests but defining strategy, coverage, and release readiness criteria.
Strong cross-functional communication skills; comfortable working across hardware and software teams and representing quality concerns to non-QA stakeholders.
Experience embedded in a hardware-adjacent software team (AI accelerator company, cloud compute, or similar) rather than a purely software QA role.
Hands-on experience with ML frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow, including the ability to write reference implementations for operator validation.
Familiarity with ML compiler toolchains (MLIR, LLVM, TVM, Glow, etc.) and how to test compiler-generated artifacts.
Experience with embedded SIMD vector processors such as Tensilica.
Prior startup or small-team experience; comfort operating with high ownership and limited process overhead.
Experience defining and implementing formal test plans and coordinating release qualification with a QA organization.
You will have a direct impact on the correctness and quality of AI compute software that ships in next-generation hardware products. As the first Staff SDET on the Kernels team, you will build quality infrastructure from the ground up and establish practices that will scale with the organization. You will work with some of the best compiler and kernel engineers in the industry, with the unique vantage point of sitting at the intersection of hardware and software quality.

Engineering manager leads a senior infrastructure team building Docker's secure container build systems and CI/CD platforms while staying hands-on with technical design and code.
Docker has been one of the most loved brands in developer tooling, trusted by more than 20 million monthly users and over 20 billion container image pulls. From solo founders to the world’s largest companies, developers rely on Docker to build, share, and run their applications across our suite of products including Docker Desktop, Docker Hub, and Docker Scout.
We are a globally distributed, remote-first team building the tools that define how software gets built and delivered. As AI agents redefine software development, Docker is at the center of that shift, providing the sandboxed environments, verified images, and secure infrastructure that make autonomous workflows trustworthy by default.
The Secure Build team builds and operates the infrastructure behind Docker’s container builds. The team owns and runs Docker Build Cloud and Docker’s Hub build systems, which run millions of builds a year for hundreds of organisations, and is building the next generation of that: secure, sandboxed CI that isolates each build step and produces hardened images with strong, verifiable provenance, including for customers in regulated and air-gapped environments. A current focus is a hardened build runner that executes each workflow step inside its own micro-VM sandbox.
We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead this team. It’s a small, very senior group that recently came together, with strong technical leadership spread across it. You’ll own the team’s delivery, growth, and operational excellence, keep its high-scale production systems healthy, and be a real part of setting the team’s technical direction alongside the engineers who lead on different parts of the system.
The successful candidate leads first. They’re an experienced engineering manager at their best turning a senior team into a high-performing, value-delivering part of the wider Docker org: getting the process and team mechanics right, partnering well with Product, and navigating the personalities on and around the team. What sets them apart is that they stay deep in the technical work rather than steering from a distance. They’re active in technical design and in the PRs, they help shape the technical direction, and they’re happy to pick up code where it moves things forward. We’re not after a 50-50 player-coach, and we’re not after someone who’s left the engineering behind either; the balance tilts to leading, but they’re hands-on enough to be properly in the detail with the team. The team has strong technical leadership across it, and direction is set together rather than by any one person, so this isn’t about being the best engineer in the room or the deepest supply-chain-security expert. It’s about being engaged and credible enough to be a real part of how the team sets its direction, not standing apart from it. They care about security broadly: how modern attacks actually work, the OWASP Top 10, and where a build pipeline is exposed. They lead through judgement, unblocking, and direction-setting rather than process for its own sake, because that’s what a senior, autonomy-heavy team responds to. They’re comfortable owning the operational reality of production systems and on-call, and they’re energised rather than thrown by ambiguity. Above all they care about growing the engineers around them and shipping something customers actually trust.
Lead a team of senior engineers operating Docker Build Cloud and Hub’s build systems and building Docker’s next generation of secure build infrastructure.
Own delivery: turn an ambiguous, high-stakes roadmap, including time-bound commitments to regulated and federal customers, into a concrete plan the team can execute predictably.
Get the team’s process and mechanics right, and partner closely with Product to turn strategy into a roadmap the team believes in.
Stay deep in the technical work: active in design discussions and code review, hands-on in the code where it helps, rather than steering from a distance.
Be a real part of setting the team’s technical direction, working with the engineers who lead on different parts of the system, while giving the whole team room to own technical decisions.
This role may require participation in an on-call rotation to provide support outside of standard business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
Be accountable for the reliability and operational excellence of the team’s production services, including a healthy, humane on-call rotation.
Own the growth, development, and performance of each engineer on the team, and hire to strengthen it.
Work across the wider org - Product, sales, commercial and legal, the Hub/registry team, and security - to align the team and shield it from churn.
Hold a high bar for engineering excellence and raise the team’s security hygiene.
5+ years managing high-performing engineering teams, including engineers at or above their own level of technical seniority, with a track record of growing and retaining senior individual contributors.
8+ years of professional, hands-on, full-time software engineering experience in backend, infrastructure, or platform engineering.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
A leader first: strong on team process and mechanics, on partnering with Product, and on reading and navigating the personalities on and around a team to make it more than the sum of its parts.
Comfortable inheriting a team they didn’t build: earning the trust of experienced engineers, and owning the full range of performance conversations, including the difficult ones, fairly and directly.
Technically deep and still hands-on: recent enough engineering chops to be active in design and code review, be a real part of setting technical direction with the team, and write code where it helps. Not the best engineer in the room or the deepest domain expert, but not a manager who’s left the technical detail behind either.
A strong interest in security: how recent attacks have actually worked, the OWASP Top 10, and the build threat model. Familiarity with software supply chain security (SLSA, in-toto, provenance, signing such as cosign, SBOMs, vulnerability scanning) is valued, but we care more about security instinct and appetite than a checklist of tools.
Understanding of CI/CD and build-system internals, container images and image hardening, and OCI registry mechanics.
Experience operating production infrastructure: on-call, incident response, SLOs, and the realities of keeping high-traffic services healthy.
Comfortable leading a distributed, remote-first team across European and US time zones, with a high degree of autonomy.
Strong written and verbal communication, and a habit of staying close to customers.
Hands-on familiarity with Go is a plus; it’s the team’s primary language.
Get to know the team, the systems, and the commitments before changing anything. Build relationships with each engineer, understand the roadmap and what the team is building, and get hands-on enough with Build Cloud and the inherited systems to understand the on-call load you’re taking on.
Own the delivery plan with the team and Product. Get the on-call rotation to a healthy, sustainable place. Be the team’s point of contact across the wider org.
The team is delivering against its roadmap and operating its production systems reliably, the on-call and delivery cadence are sustainable, and the team is growing both in capability and in number.
