About Us

At Cloudflare, we are on a mission to help build a better Internet. Today the company runs one of the world’s largest networks that powers millions of websites and other Internet properties for customers ranging from individual bloggers to SMBs to Fortune 500 companies. Cloudflare protects and accelerates any Internet application online without adding hardware, installing software, or changing a line of code. Internet properties powered by Cloudflare all have web traffic routed through its intelligent global network, which gets smarter with every request. As a result, they see significant improvement in performance and a decrease in spam and other attacks. Cloudflare was named to Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top Company Cultures list and ranked among the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company.

At Cloudflare, we’re not looking for people who wait for a polished roadmap; we’re looking for the builders who see the cracks in the Internet that everyone else has simply learned to live with. We value candidates who have the instinct to spot a “normalized” problem and the AI-native curiosity to create a solution using the latest tools. Our culture is built on iteration, leveraging AI to ship faster today to make it better tomorrow, while ensuring that every improvement, no matter how small, is shared across the team to lift everyone up. If you’re the type of person who values curiosity over bureaucracy, and that AI is a partner in solving tough problems to keep the Internet moving forward, you’ll fit right in.

About Role

We are actively seeking experienced and highly motivated Distributed Systems Engineers to join Cloudflare’s dynamic DATA Organisation. This is a pivotal opportunity to contribute to the future of data at Cloudflare, working on systems that are fundamental to our global operations and customer insights. Our organisation is responsible for the entire data lifecycle, encompassing everything from initial ingestion and sophisticated processing to robust storage and efficient retrieval. These systems are the backbone that power critical logs and analytics, providing our customers with real-time, actionable visibility into the health, performance, and security of their online properties.

Our overarching mission is to empower customers to leverage their data effectively, enabling them to drive superior outcomes for their businesses. To achieve this, we design, build, and maintain a suite of high-performance, massively scalable distributed systems that are engineered to handle an unprecedented scale – processing well over a billion events per second. As an engineer within our organisation, you will be presented with unique challenges across various critical parts of our intricate data stack. This role offers the chance to work on cutting-edge technologies and contribute to solutions that operate at the very edge of internet infrastructure.

Our Data Organisation is strategically composed of several key teams, each focusing on a distinct aspect of our comprehensive data platform:

  • Data Delivery / Data Pipeline: This team is responsible for the design, development, and operation of our distributed data delivery pipeline. This system is a high-throughput, low-latency powerhouse, primarily written in Go, and is tasked with ingesting, processing, and intelligently routing massive volumes of data originating from across Cloudflare’s vast global network to multiple core destinations. This involves handling diverse data types and ensuring reliable, timely delivery to various downstream systems.

  • Analytical Database Platform: Engineers on this team contribute to and evolve our core analytical platform, which is powered by ClickHouse. This team is dedicated to building and maintaining a high-performance, scalable database platform meticulously optimised for the immense analytical workloads generated by all of Cloudflare’s products and services. This includes ensuring data integrity, query optimisation, and continuous platform scalability to meet ever-growing demands.

  • Data Retrieval (Customer-Facing Products): This department is focused on building and continuously improving our customer-facing products, making data not only accessible but also genuinely actionable for our users. This department comprises two main groups:

    • Analytics and Alerts: Members of this group are at the forefront of developing our public APIs such as the GraphQL Analytics API, providing customers and internal Cloudflare teams with flexible access to their data. They will also work on our alerting platform, empowering users to configure and receive near real-time alerts based on the critical logs and metrics observed by our robust data platform. This includes designing intuitive alerting mechanisms and ensuring the reliability of notification systems.
    • Logs and Audit Logs: This specialised team is dedicated to building a robust and easy-to-use logging platform that powers reliable data delivery and seamless integrations with customer destinations. The team’s mission is to make it simple for customers to access, manage, and use their log data — ensuring that critical datasets, including comprehensive audit logs, are delivered securely and efficiently to their preferred storage and analysis platforms. The work spans developing intuitive connectors, ensuring data integrity, optimising delivery pipelines, and upholding strict standards for compliance, performance, and usability.

Responsibilities

This particular role is focused on the Logs and Audit Logs group. As a Software Engineer you will focus on the following areas:

  • Design, build, and operate a robust logging platform, ensuring reliable logging, and secure data transfer to a wide array of customer destinations and third-party integrations.
  • Develop and maintain high-performance data connectors and integrations for our log-shipping products, focusing on usability, scalability and data integrity.
  • Create and manage systems for handling comprehensive audit logs, ensuring they are delivered securely and adhere to strict compliance and performance standards.
  • Scale and optimise the data delivery pipeline to handle massive data volumes with low latency, identifying and removing bottlenecks in data processing and routing.
  • Work closely with Product and other engineering teams to define requirements for a new logging platform and integrations.
  • Maintain the operational health of our log delivery platform through comprehensive monitoring and participation in an on-call rotation (with flexibility for out-of-hours technical issue resolution).
  • Collaborate on the architectural evolution of our data egress platform, researching and implementing new technologies to improve efficiency and reliability.

Key Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience working in software development covering distributed systems and data pipelines.
  • Strong programming skills (Go is preferable), with a deep understanding of software development best practices for building resilient, high-throughput systems.
  • Hands-on experience with modern observability stacks, including Prometheus, Grafana, and a strong understanding of handling high-cardinality metrics at scale.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL, including experience with query optimisation.
  • A solid foundation in computer science, including algorithms, data structures, distributed systems, and concurrency.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a willingness to debug, troubleshoot, and learn about complex problems at high scale.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate effectively with other teams across Cloudflare.
  • Experience with data streaming technologies (e.g., Kafka, Flink) is a strong plus.
  • Experience with various logging platforms or SIEMs (e.g., Splunk, Datadog, Sumo Logic) and storage destinations (e.g., S3, R2, GCS) is a plus.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools like SALT or Terraform is a plus.
  • Experience with Linux container technologies, such as Docker and Kubernetes, is a plus.

Location: Hybrid / San Francisco, CA

What’s the role?

We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to act as the technical anchor for a small, focused team working on Data and ML infrastructure. Your work will directly support large-scale machine learning applied to precision healthcare.

This is a highly technical, player-coach role. You will set the architectural vision and guide the day-to-day technical execution of the team, remaining deeply hands-on in the codebase. Whether you are already a seasoned tech lead or a Staff Individual Contributor (IC) ready to step up and guide a sub-team of engineers, this position gives you the platform to lead technically.

This is a full-time position operating on a hybrid schedule out of our San Francisco office.

What’s this team like at Heartflow?

We build Data & ML infrastructure to simplify developing, evaluating, and deploying algorithms on massive medical imaging datasets. Our team owns critical platforms across the stack: data systems focused on curation and analytics, as well as our core ML environment for both training and inference.

We design our infrastructure to not just be highly performant, but also easy to use. We are proponents of self-serve interfaces and robust user documentation. Our team tackles challenging problems using first-principles thinking, and we greatly value the ability to break down complex architectural challenges into digestible, well-communicated solutions.

What does the day-to-day look like?

  • Act as the technical lead and mentor for a small, high-impact team of engineers, guiding system design, conducting code reviews, and unblocking technical hurdles.
  • Write high-performance Python code and utilize frameworks like Ray to architect and maintain large-scale distributed computing platforms for ML training and evaluation.
  • Spearhead the deployment of complex ML algorithms into highly available, scalable cloud environments, ensuring models run efficiently in production.
  • Design and integrate robust cloud-data systems to manage the lifecycle of massive, unstructured medical datasets.
  • Work cross-functionally with researchers and engineers to understand how they develop models, using that understanding to solve their ML training, serving, and production monitoring needs.
  • Responsibly and securely utilize AI-powered development tools (like coding assistants or LLMs) to accelerate the team’s engineering workflows.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong focus on ML infrastructure, distributed systems, or MLOps.
  • A history of mentoring peers and leading technical projects, and an excitement to act as the technical anchor for a small team of engineers.
  • Ability to write clear, well-tested, and scalable code, with high proficiency in Python.
  • Deep understanding of modern distributed computing architectures and how to optimize heavy compute and cloud-data workloads (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code (e.g., CDK, Terraform).
  • Familiarity with modern distributed computing frameworks and table formats like Ray, Kubernetes, and Apache Iceberg.
  • Knowledge of cross-language bindings for high-performance computing (e.g., C++/Python).
  • Prior experience in the healthcare domain, highly-regulated environments, or handling image-based algorithms is a huge plus.

Salary Range: $190,000 - $250,000 base, plus cash bonus and equity.

Heartflow is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are committed to a work environment that supports, inspires, and respects all individuals and do not discriminate against any employee or applicant because of race, color, religion, marital status, age, national origin, ancestry, physical or mental disability, medical condition, pregnancy, genetic information, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, veteran status, or any other status protected under federal, state, or local law. • Backend — FastAPI (Python 3.11) with async SQLAlchemy 2.0 over PostgreSQL.

  • Data — PostgreSQL per service; Prisma and SQLAlchemy as the ORM seams.

  • Testing — BDD/Gherkin across layers: Vitest + vitest-cucumber (TS), pytest-bdd + httpx (FastAPI), Playwright (e2e).

  • Infra & delivery — GitHub Actions CI/CD, Docker, Container Apps, Key Vault, OIDC federated auth.

Lazo handles sensitive data — SSNs, EINs, passports, bank accounts, cap tables, tax filings. Security, data integrity, and auditability are the top priorities, ahead of availability, privacy/compliance (SOC 2, GDPR, CCPA), testability, and maintainability.

What you’ll do

  • Take specs and features all the way to production — backend, frontend, tests, deploy.

  • Write Gherkin tests before writing code. A claim that isn’t backed by a test doesn’t exist.

  • Use AI tools (Claude, Claude Code, MCP) as part of your daily workflow, not as an experiment.

  • Contribute to technical decisions with conviction: propose, question, improve.

  • Handle sensitive data (SSNs, EINs, bank accounts, cap tables) with the seriousness it demands — security, tenant isolation, auditability, mask-on-read.

  • Collaborate directly with the team to understand the problem before solving it.

What we’re looking for

Hard skills:

  • Solid fullstack experience — backend and frontend in production environments.

  • Strong command of React / Next.js (App Router, RSC) and TypeScript.

  • Familiarity with async, event-driven architectures and RESTful API design.

  • Comfort with PostgreSQL and ORMs (SQLAlchemy, Prisma, or similar).

  • Experience writing tests — unit, integration, and ideally BDD/Gherkin.

  • Python knowledge at an architectural level (not necessarily years of hands-on production experience).

  • Exposure to cloud environments (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and CI/CD pipelines.

Mindset:

  • Background in high-stakes environments — banking, fintech, or startups where systems have to work, no excuses.

  • Actively curious: you try new things before anyone asks you to.

  • Strong fundamentals mindset: you’re not interested in the quick hack that blows up in production.

  • Genuinely AI-first: Claude Code, MCP, AI-assisted workflows are tools you already use or pick up fast.

  • Able to work from specs as input and code as output — Specs Driven Development.

  • Advanced English.

Benefits

  • 100% remote

  • Flexible work culture — we measure by results

  • 3 weeks of vacation

  • Week off between Christmas and New Year’s Eve

  • Health benefits

  • Birthday day off

Interview Process

  • Silver Recruiter Screen

  • Take-home Challenge

  • Take-home review

Engineer Head of Engineering at Freddie's Flowers

Head of Engineering owns technology strategy, leads a high-performing engineering team, establishes system architecture, and drives AI integration across the product and business.

Lead Posted about 17 hours ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

Freddie’s Flowers was founded by Freddie Garland in October 2014 with one ambition: to change people’s relationship with flowers. We believe flowers aren’t only for grand occasions, but they make every day special, inspiring creativity and sparking joy.

Our starting point was our direct-to-consumer subscription model, helping us grow a loyal UK following. We launched in Germany in 2020, and then in 2021 we secured significant backing from The Craftory, a like-minded purpose-led global investment house, helping us expand, develop and grow. 2023 saw us start our gifting service – bringing the best of Freddie’s Flowers to everyone who needs it (even last minute!).

From the seed of an idea we continue to flourish; we’re now a B Corp organisation. And our founding mission remains unchanged – to change the world of flowers, and to change the world with flowers.

The Opportunity

Technology is the operating system of this business. Every customer interaction and every commercial decision flows through it. The goal is to make that operating system fast, reliable, and commercially intelligent. To make engineering the function that enables growth, not the one that responds to it.

The strategic direction is set and board-backed. The Head of Engineering owns its execution and will shape what good looks like in practice. That means ensuring a high-performing team, establishing the architecture that will carry the business through its next stage, and creating the conditions for engineering to operate as a genuine partner with a seat at the table when commercial decisions are made.

There is material commercial upside that has not yet been realised. Partnering with the Commercial function around customer data that could sharpen targeting and improve retention offers a significant opportunity. Demand forecasting, pricing optimisation, and AI integration across the product are further opportunities requiring ownership & delivery. This role has the mandate and the board visibility to pursue all of it.

What You Will Do

– Own the technology strategy end-to-end and deliver against measurable milestones

– Set the bar for a high-quality engineering team across hiring, standards, culture

– Establish engineering as a product partner, shaping the commercial roadmap as well as executing it

– Make the architecture and infrastructure decisions that will carry the business forward

– Lead the AI integration agenda across the product and the wider business

– Represent technology at leadership level with clarity and commercial authority

What We Need

– Scaled engineering in a DTC or subscription business. You know what breaks under real commercial pressure

– Hands-on technical depth: AWS-native, comfortable with architecture decisions, capable of writing production code when it matters

– Has hired engineers and built teams before

– Commercially literate. Frames technology in terms of cost, risk, and revenue, and is comfortable in a board conversation

– Motivated by what gets shipped and what it delivers, not the sophistication of the solution

Why Take This Role

– Full ownership: you are leading this team and this function. The architecture, the hiring, the standards. All yours, from day one

– A brand worth building for: Freddie’s has a genuine founder story, a loyal subscription customer base, and a floristry-first identity that sets it apart in a crowded market

– Commercial impact at scale: the data asset, the AI agenda, the shift to a mixed subscription and gifting model. There is material commercial upside for a technology leader who executes well

– Board visibility: you sit in the leadership team, report to the CGO, and have direct access to the people making the strategic decisions

– A real brief with backing to match: the strategic direction is agreed, the investment is committed, and the mandate is clear. This is not a role where you spend six months working out what to do

  • Option to buy extra holiday days
  • Discounted flowers for friends/family
  • WFH (where applicable)
  • Learning and Development Support
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Discounted gym membership
  • Cash plan with Medicash
  • Health and wellbeing sessions with The Mind Clinic
  • Team socials and events

Inclusion:

Freddie’s Flowers recognises our success is dependent on the success of our people. Freddie’s Flowers is committed to creating an inclusive work environment with a diverse workforce where everyone feels safe and valued. All applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, disability or age.

  • Set quality standards and best practices for the Kernels team; mentor engineers on testability design and defensive coding.

  • Contribute to design reviews with a quality lens, identifying areas that require additional validation before tape-out or release.

  • Influence test strategy across the full software stack: from unit and integration tests to system-level validation on target hardware.

What You Will Bring

Minimum Qualifications

  • BSc in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Math, Physics, or a related field with 6+ years of industry experience; or MS with 4+ years of experience; or PhD with 2+ years of experience, with at least 2 years focused on test engineering, SDET, or quality engineering roles.

  • Strong understanding of computer architecture, data structures, and machine learning fundamentals, sufficient to reason about correctness and performance of ML kernels.

  • Proficient in C/C++ and Python; experience writing production-quality test code in these languages in Linux environments.

  • Experience writing automated tests for algorithms targeting specialized hardware such as GPUs, DSPs, FPGAs, or AI accelerators (e.g., using CUDA or equivalent).

  • Familiarity with ML operators commonly used in production workloads: GEMMs, convolutions, BLAS, SIMD operations, softmax, layer normalization, pooling, and similar.

  • Experience building or working within CI/CD pipelines and automated regression systems.

  • Track record of owning quality outcomes, not just executing tests but defining strategy, coverage, and release readiness criteria.

  • Strong cross-functional communication skills; comfortable working across hardware and software teams and representing quality concerns to non-QA stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience embedded in a hardware-adjacent software team (AI accelerator company, cloud compute, or similar) rather than a purely software QA role.

  • Hands-on experience with ML frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow, including the ability to write reference implementations for operator validation.

  • Familiarity with ML compiler toolchains (MLIR, LLVM, TVM, Glow, etc.) and how to test compiler-generated artifacts.

  • Experience with embedded SIMD vector processors such as Tensilica.

  • Prior startup or small-team experience; comfort operating with high ownership and limited process overhead.

  • Experience defining and implementing formal test plans and coordinating release qualification with a QA organization.

Why This Role

You will have a direct impact on the correctness and quality of AI compute software that ships in next-generation hardware products. As the first Staff SDET on the Kernels team, you will build quality infrastructure from the ground up and establish practices that will scale with the organization. You will work with some of the best compiler and kernel engineers in the industry, with the unique vantage point of sitting at the intersection of hardware and software quality.
